07. Conclusión

Como paradigma reinante en geociencias, la tectónica de placas tiene algunos problemas muy graves y aparentemente fatales. Lejos de ser una teoría global simple, donosa y omniabarcante, se enfrenta a una multitud de anomalías observacionales y ha tenido que ser remendada con una variedad compleja de modificaciones e hipótesis auxiliares ad hoc. La existencia de raíces continentales profundas y la falta de una astenosfera global y continua para “lubricar” los movimientos de placas han hecho insostenible el modelo clásico de desplazamientos tectónicos. No existe consenso sobre el grosor de las "placas" y tampoco certeza respecto a las fuerzas responsables de su presunto movimiento. Las hipótesis de deriva continental a gran escala, la expansión y subducción del fondo marino y la relativa juventud de la corteza oceánica están refutadas por un volumen sustancial de datos. La evidencia sobre cantidades significativas de corteza continental sumergida en los océanos actuales ofrece otro desafío importante para la tectónica de placas, y así sus principios fundamentales necesitan reexaminación crítica o rechazo.
